Potion Making

I was just looking at the "If I was a Witch/Wizard" thread and Kash said if she were a witch she'd brew a love potion. So that got me to thinking....

Does magic actually go into potion making or could a muggle (assuming s/he had the materials) throw them together and make a potion?

This is just an example for some of the details that I find a little strange on HP.
We all know that the wizarding worlds usually didn't pay much attention to the Muggle world or the inventions there. Most of the time that's because magic provided even easier and faster solutions to problems. But really, why do they still insist on using ink and quills for writing at school when paper (bound into books and the like) is so much easier to use? Same with the scales for measuring...

The Shrieking Shack Incident

Did the Shrieking Shack Incident really not happen till *their* sixth year? Why did it always seem it happened in their fifth year? Does some of it depend on when the boys mastered becoming animagi? Was that not until their fifth year? Apparently they found out about Remus' true problem in their second year and I guess started to work on becoming animagi then, 2nd through 5th year.....or am I mistaken? Did...

I've always been curious about what exactly they can do.

They can heal a lot of stuff, but when it comes to stuff like eyesight, Dumbledore and Harry both had glasses. Do you think that was just a personal choice on their behalf or can magic not heal stuff like that.

Also, how powerful of healers do you think they are in St. Mungos. There has to be a limit to what you can do.

This is kinda open ended I guess....

How did Neville come by that sword?

This is something that has been puzzling me for quite a while. Neville is the one who kills the snake. We know she's a Horcrux. Horcruxes can only be destroyed in a certain way. The sword of Gyffindor is one tool - and Nevile uses a sword. But how did he get his hands on it?

We know that wands are made out of all sorts of materials (different types of woods, dragon heartstrings, unicorn hairs, phoenix feathers) and that the wand tends to choose the wizard unless it is won in battle. What do you guys think Sirius' original wand from Hogwarts was made out of, and where did he get the one he used in the Shrieking Shack?

I had one question to compliment Kash's question from a little while back, and I am a little stuck on the question myself. The basic form of the question is this in which I am curious as to what all of you might want for yourself or think you could pull off:

If you could not have a career as a professor in Hogwarts or another wizarding and witchcraft school, then what other career would you have liked to try? Ministry work? Joke product seller? Magical product...

The Ending

In general...whenever I talk with the normal folk who just read Harry Potter, they don't actually obsess over it, they always ask about the ending of the book.

I usually say the ending was good, but a bit disappointing. I mean come on, I thought Harry would develop some real power. But apparently not

The Ministry of Magic

Just a general topic here to discuss the wizarding government. Maybe JKR had some parallels from today's world.

The Minister: I'm not sure if the minister is kind of like an elected monarch. He is elected into office, but there don't appear to be any term limits or anything to restrict his actions. There is no congress as far as we know to check his power. There are subdivisions like the Department of Magical Law Enforcement, but I don't think...

The Government Manual for New Wizards

I found this book in at Borders yesterday and it's a hoot. At the top of the front cover it says: EFFECTIVE DATE: July 21, 2007.

As you've probably already guessed, it contains a lot of tongue and cheek references not only to Harry Potter, but to several other books as well, such as the Wizard of Oz and the Chronicles of Narnia.

Dumbledore's Weakness

So everyone always says that Dumbledore's greatest weakness was that he trusted people too much.

But with the information we've gotten from book 7 do you think that's true? We found out in the end that Dumbledore did have a very good reason for trusting Snape.

He doesn't seem to have made any mistakes that I remember about trusting people.

Did Dumbledore have a weakness?

How do you feel about Snape now?

I mean, despite the fact that he was Dumbledore's man through and through he still did treat Harry like crap. And he was evil to him and treated him unfairly.

He was definitely worthy of being in Gryfindor but do you like him? And what are your feelings about his death?

Is Harry Powerful?

Looking back on the books I continue to get a sense of feeling that Harry just go lucky.

The entire plan to destroy the horcruxes and everything that went for Harry, Ron, and Hermione was really orchestrated by Dumbledore. The Deluminator, the book, the sword, it was all planned from the back by Dumbledore.

I get the impression that Harry isn't an exceptional wizard. As some guy said in some movie "He's an ordinary person put under extraordinary...

So I noticed that Harry never used the killing curse in the entire book.

In the beginning of the book when Harry disarms Stan instead of stupefying him, Lupin says something like "At least stun them if you're not prepared to kill"

Often I feel as if the unforgiveable curses aren't quite so unforgiveable. We have seen Harry use a few of the curses and he never faces consequences for his use of them. Also, it seems to me that many members of the Order do...
